Acronis True Image is the best program ever written for backing up your computer . It will create an image backup of your entire computer allowing you to restore every bit of information including your operating system and programs if a trouble arises.

Even if you cannot start windows a recovery disk will get you up and running to the point where you can restore from your external USB hard drive. It will allow you to extract individual files simply by dragging and dropping them from your backup on to your computer this is called a virtual drive and any backup you have can be "Mounted as a drive letter" thereby giving you access to previously backed up files.

External Drive Size: Your External Hard Drive should be 3 times the size of your C drive. Double click "My Computer" then right click on
 "Local disk C" and select properties. Look at the Used Space Number. It will be in GigaBytes. Most people are around 20.0 GB requiring a minimum of 60 GB of external drive space.
Norton ghost should never be used. Its recovery is a nightmare ! I hate it !
It will backup to USB external hardrives fine but its restore features do not even support the majority of USB Drives and most people find out when they cannot restore. OOPS too late ! Norton will not respond on this topic and its hyped up tech support is non-existant.
I tried to create a system restore CD for Ghost and met failure every time including finding compatible USB drivers. I cannot contact support that is of any help.  Let them go out of business. don't buy their products !
